The new Retreat at Blue Lagoon offers guests a truly unique luxury experience at one of the world’s most impressive natural wonders.

From massive glaciers to expansive lava fields, Iceland boasts some of the most impressive natural wonders in the world. Located in the heart of its volcanic frontier, the Blue Lagoon is no exception.

Just a 15-minute drive from Keflavík International Airport, the Blue Lagoon gives travelers the rare opportunity to relax in its rejuvenating, mineral-rich geothermal waters.

“Water is found all over the planet, but there is no water quite as unique as Blue Lagoon’s geothermal seawater,” says Grímur Sæmundsen, CEO and founder of Blue Lagoon Iceland. “Collectively, the waterscape and the landscape unlock sensations and emotions that many visitors find to be unforgettable.”

Visitors taking a dip at the enchanting Blue Lagoon Iceland can also take advantage of the sauna and steam rooms, revitalize their skin at the in-water mask bar and refresh themselves with beverages from the swim-up bar. At the right time of year, an evening visit to this spacious outdoor spa, where the water temperature hovers around 100 degrees, might even provide a coveted view of the Northern Lights or the midnight sun.

The surreal, organic beauty and awe-inspiring atmosphere extends from the natural spa to overnight accommodations at the Retreat, a new 62-suite luxury hotel carved directly into an 800-year-old lava flow on the Blue Lagoon’s west bank. Designed by Basalt Architects and Design Group Italia to blend seamlessly into its natural surroundings, the hotel also highlights features distinct to its environment. The result is a tranquil, wellness-focused sanctuary, while the legendary Blue Lagoon offers a more social experience.

The Retreat also features a remarkable subterranean spa and a terraced lagoon that flows through an otherworldly concourse of lava canyons. Beyond the stunning visual appeal of the five-star hotel, guests enjoy unmatched service that guarantees an exceptional visit. After welcoming guests, individual hosts work with them to coordinate their schedules and offer tips on how to make the most of their trips.

“Our people strive to be unforgettable hosts and to fulfill the core promise we make to our guests: to create memories,” Sæmundsen says.

In addition to traditional treatments offered at the spa, guests at the Retreat can book in-water massages that take place in the lagoon, take yoga classes, go on guided hikes and book preferred tee times at a nearby golf course. They can also relax each afternoon with traditional Icelandic coffee offered in the lobby.

The suites, designed with a minimalist aesthetic, are appointed with sleek, earth-toned furniture, including king-size beds that face floor-to-ceiling windows and private terraces or balconies that provide unfettered views of the moss-covered, volcanic terrain surrounding the hotel. Some suites also open into private lagoons, allowing around-the-clock access to the water.

The Retreat is also home to Moss Restaurant, which offers an ever-changing menu of gourmet Icelandic fare served in an airy dining room on the highest point on the property, looking out over the rugged landscape and dramatic terrain. Diners can select from a world-class wine list, featuring bottles stored in a wine cellar carved into the lava below the restaurant, to complement their meals.

“Our primary aim as a company and destination,” Sæmundsen says, “is to transform natural wonders into unique experiences.”
