RESOURCE CENTER: AIDS in Africa

As the AIDS epidemic continues to spread, its has had a severe impact on the African continent.  The disease is affecting adults and children throughout all segments of the population.  It is no longer seen as just a public health crisis, but as an economic development crisis for African countries. Life expectancy has fallen, poverty is increasing and economic growth has slowed. Several African countries, including Uganda, Senegal and Zambia, have had success with extensive education and prevention programs. There is a growing movement worldwide to make drug therapies affordable to African countries. This devastation could spread to other areas of the world. The World Bank, the U.N., the European Community and NGOs are working to control this epidemic and repair the economic and social infrastructures it has caused.
