CARL LEWIS (1961- )
One of the greatest pure athletes of all-time, Carl Lewis won four Olympic gold medals in 1984 and finished his career with a collection of nine, a record he shares with three others. His final gold came in 1996 in his signature event, the long jump, which he once won 65 straight times over a decade. He did it with flash -- some say without enough class -- ushering in an era in which sprinters could be perceived as rock stars.
