ARTHUR ASHE (1943-1993)
Arthur Ashe was a Wimbledon champion and the No.1-ranked tennis player in the world in 1975, but his accomplishments off the court define his legacy. He was a man of many causes. Some he chose -- he battled apartheid in South Africa and raised millions of dollars for inner-city causes. One he did not -- after going public in 1992 about his affliction of AIDS, Ashe became a vocal leader for research funding and education about the illness until his death in 1993.
