THURGOOD MARHSALL (1908-1993)
Appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1967, Marshall was the first black person to join the Court. Before taking the bench, Marshall was an influential civil rights attorney, arguing more than 30 cases before the Supreme Court and challenging (often successfully) racist laws.
