MARY MCLEOD BETHUNE (1875-1955)
A leader in the fields of education and civil rights, Bethune rose to prominence when she founded the Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute for Negro Girls in 1904. She continued to advocate advanced education for black women, and later served as FDR's special adviser on minority affairs.
