MALCOLM X (1925-1965)
Born Malcolm Little, the militant black rights leader became a Muslim minister after spending time in prison. His fierce belief in black separatism launched Malcolm X to prominence in the Black Muslim community until a disagreement with leader Elijah Mohammed prompted him to explore other veins of Islamic faith, and eventually to embrace the possibility of blacks and whites working together. Malcolm X was assassinated in New York City in February of 1965.
