JAMES BROWN (1934- ) and ARETHA FRANLIN (1942- )
Brown is an energetic, intense singer best known for his gospel-tinged, rhythm and blues songs that influenced the direction of funk, soul and disco. Still a constantly touring showman, the Godfather of Soul's recordings progress from the early, soul-stirring shout of "Please, Please, Please" (1956) to the proto-funk of "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag Boy" (1965) to the black power anthem "Say It Loud—I'm Black and I'm Proud" (1968).

Franklin, pictured here with Brown, is a Grammy Award-winning soul singer known for her influence on pop music. Her music combines gospel, jazz, pop and rhythm and blues. Her recordings include "Respect" (1967), "Chain of Fools" (1968), and "Freeway of Love" (1985).
