VINE MAPLE LEAF
Meriwether Lewis observed this tree leaf, later identified as a vine maple, in the Columbia River area. "The leaf is petiolate, plane, scattered, palmate lobate, divided by four deep sinuses," Lewis wrote on Feb. 10, 1806.
