Director Baz Luhrmann nabbed the Director's Guild's top honor for "Moulin Rouge," and his psychedelic musical did collect 8 nominations, tying it for second with "A Beautiful Mind." But with Luhrman not even on the Best Director list — despite "Rouge" obviously being a film only Luhrmann could have made, Altman and Lynch are old Academy favorites — his picture seems destined for also-ran status as well.
