7:15 – 8:00 am BREAKFAST
8:15 – 9:10 am BIG FOOD — HEALTHY PROFITS
Food and beverage companies have drunk the Kool-Aid, or rather the Gatorade. The health and wellness brands of the largest food companies are the fastest growing segments of the business and nearly everybody has jumped on the low-carb bandwagon. All is not rosy, however. There are lawsuits in the wings and the big brands continue to be at the center of several hot button issues: vending machines in schools, advertising to children, confusing, some would say misleading, nutritional labeling. What is the next frontier? How will Big Food be different in five years? How do their solutions jibe with the government's and the food activists'? Where does their responsibility start and stop? U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona will moderate a discussion with Big Food leaders.

Niels Christiansen, Vice President—Public Affairs, Nestle SA
Betsy Holden, President, Global Marketing and Category Development, Kraft Foods Inc.

9:20 – 10:00 am MEDIA—PART OF THE SOLUTION OR...
Television, film, radio, newspapers and magazines have all helped fuel the diet and fitness frenzy. But their coverage is often limited to the latest fad diet, and their business models are driven in part by food ads. Why doesn't the media do a better job covering the obesity crisis? A chance to put the press in the hot seat.

Panelists:
Paul Campos, Author, The Obesity Myth
Liz Dolan, Co-host, Satellite Sisters
Ann Pleshette Murphy, Parenting Contributor, Good Morning America

10:05 – 10:25 am REBUILDING THE FOOD PYRAMID
The food pyramid is getting an overhaul. Scheduled for release in concert with the newly revised Dietary Guidelines for Americans in early 2005, the resulting food guidance system developed in an open and transparent process. The USDA agency aims to ensure the results are founded in current science, even while being buffeted by politicians, lobbyists, nutritionists and activitists with wildly different agendas. Reaching the general public with science-based information in easily understandable formats that can be tailored to individual needs is critical. Dr. Hentges will give us a status report AND hear participants' input.

Speaker:
Eric Hentges, Executive Director, Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, USDA

Hispanics, African Americans and Native Americans are at especially high risk for childhood obesity. In urban Hispanic areas, for example, one in every three children is likely to be obese. What is being done to fight the epidemic among the nation's minorities, especially those living in urban environments?

Clinic: Keeping It Off
What does the research tell us about keeping it off or never putting it on? The National Weight Registry has been monitoring the success of individuals who have managed to lose at least 60 lbs and keep it off. Other researchers have been amassing their own data for decades as well. The data gathered from monitoring these heroes has meaning for everyone who struggles with weight loss, or is a caregiver for the obese. What works?
