Richard E. Killingsworth is the director of the Active Living by Design National Program Office at the University of North Carolina – School of Public Health. This program, supported by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, was established to support local efforts to promote physical activity through community design and transportation alternatives. Mr. Killingsworth also serves as an associate research professor in the department of health behavior and health education.

Previously, Mr. Killingsworth was a health scientist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and served as the lead interventionist on CDC's active community environments initiative. In this role he provided technical assistance to federal agencies, state health departments and national organizations on issues related to socio-environmental determinants of physical activity and health.

Mr. Killingsworth is widely recognized as a national expert on the relationships of community design, transportation, and physical activity. His ultimate vision is to see walking and bicycling become widely accepted forms of transportation and physical activity.
