Nordic Expression

Pure form and ulility are trademarks of Scandinavian design from the
'50s and '60s. Now a rising generation is injecting that sober tradition
with new playfulness. "The giants have for the most part passed, and
there is some freedom to re-evaluate," says Katherine Nelson, author of
New Scandinavian Design. Among the standouts are Swede Hanna
Ljungstrom's colorful crystal "wallpaper" bowls, decorated with designs
that recall her childhood bedroom. Danish company Eva Solo's grill
offers collapsible legs that convert the barbecue's flat lid into a
serving table (at left). Upside-down wine glasses make up the Glass
Cluster chandelier from Form Nasielsky in Stockholm. The stemware is
meant to be used and then rehung.
