Fall 2005 Style & Design
Parisienne Raphaele Canot is the new artistic director of De Beers fine jewelry. Betsy Kroll discusses diamonds with her.

What is the De Beers signature look?

Lightness and movement and the idea of designing with the stones instead of making the designs first and then filling them in with stones. This is very different from what other brands do.

What inspires you?

For the Radiance collection, I was inspired by the properties of the diamonds, and I wanted to give it a Renaissance feeling. The designs have this ambiguity in between a vintage look and a very modern look. To me it's very important that diamond jewelry look familiar to the woman who's going to wear it because it is so intimate to wear a diamond.

What is the one piece of De Beers jewelry everyone should have?

The Radiance Band, which is a ring that's very delicate, very irreverent, very thin and totally timeless.

What's your favorite thing about jewelry?

It's the intimacy we have with a piece of jewelry. It's something very emotional. This is what is very magical about jewelry, this irrational dimension.
