Fall 2005 Style & Design
Arthur Golden's best-selling novel Memoirs of a Geisha sparked a major fashion trend when it was published in 1999. Suddenly suburban housewives were poking hair sticks through their tresses, and Madonna even gave herself a makeover complete with kimonos and jet-black hair. Come December, the Rob Marshall—directed film adaptation will open, and this time the geisha look will be enhanced by box-office tie-ins. One of the best comes from Fresh cosmetics, which is introducing a Memoirs of a Geisha beauty collection that includes shimmering crushed-pearl powder and cream blush in brilliant shades of red. The packaging cleverly matches kimonos worn in the film, and the elegance of the products could inspire beauty aficionados to adapt geisha-style pampering. Fresh co-founder Alina Roytberg's simple take on why the look will catch on: "There was an enigmatic beauty to the famed geisha face." What woman wouldn't want that?
