Carrie Underwood and Rascal Flatts
Tribute to Bob Wills and Don Henley
New San Antonio Rose/Hotel California/Desperado/Life in the Fastlane
Grade: D

Huh? According to Reba McEntire's intro, the link here is that Wills died the same year the Eagles were becoming a big hit band and—get this!—both Wills and Henley came from Texas. Underwood can sing (she was given Best New Artist and pretty much deserved it) but it's hard to generate momentum on New San Antonio Rose when the crowd is watching a montage of a guy who died three decades ago. Rascal Flatts took a swing at Hotel California, but getting country's nicest band to cover rock's most satanic song is a colossal error in judgment. Then it was back to Underwood doing a dull take on Desperado followed by an 'everybody to the stage' version of Life in the Fastlane. The whole thing—from the choice of honorees to the song selection to the performers—seemed to have been decided by a special Grammy dartboard.
