In the first of the evening's endless tributes to the environmentalist ex-veep, Leo announced that the Oscars are "officially going green" (hmm, what were they last year?) and then played straight man for the night's first big laugh. Considering all his hard work, Leo suggested, might Gore not be inspired to make a "major, major announcement" tonight? At which point Gore pulled out a speech and began: "My fellow Americans, I'm going to take this opportunity right here and now to formally announce..." before the orchestra played him off. The nearly 4-hr. show could have used more of that.
