The 'Blog' of 'Unnecessary' Quotation Marks

If you've ever encountered ads for "fresh" ground beef or "pizza" by the slice, you know all too well the scourge of inappropriate quotation marks. And no one mocks misplaced punctuation better than the "Blog" of "Unnecessary" Quotation Marks. (See the 25 best blogs of 2009.)

The blog was devised by Bethany Keeley, a 26-year-old graduate student in communications at the University of Georgia who describes herself as a "geeky child" who always had an interest in writing and language. She started the blog in 2005 as an occasional record of the bad grammar she encountered in day-to-day life, but the blog tapped a nerve. After the Associated Press discovered the site in 2007, Keeley recalls, she began receiving hundreds of submissions from around the world every day. Some particularly egregious examples: questionable "freshness," confused signage and ... this.

"I never thought this would be my claim to fame — these weird, dumb things," she says. In the end, it may not be. Though Keeley says the blog generates some extra income each month, the real prize is a book deal she's hoping to sign this fall. The recently engaged Keeley says she's hoping the money will help finance her wedding.
