Vyrodov at his home in the police barracks. After the Soviets left, he was persecuted by the Taliban until the movement's leaders recognized the p.r. value of an enemy deserter who had converted to Islam. When the Taliban were routed, Vyrodov spent six months in jail as a suspected al-Qaeda fighter, narrowly avoiding being sent to the U.S. detention camp at Guantanamo Bay. He was released with apologies and offered a job with the police
