THAI TRANSIT: Starting Oct. 1, Bangkok International Airport will waive its 500 baht (about $12) transit/transfer fee for passengers who temporarily depart the airport, provided they return within 12 hours. Passengers need only fill out a request form upon arrival to qualify for the exemption. The Association of Thai Travel Agents and the Tourism Authority of Thailand are organizing special tours from the airport for visiting day-trippers. The TAT is also distributing a guidebook for passengers who wish to explore downtown Bangkok on their own.
FILM FREE: Cinema fans would do well to hit Taiwan this week to catch the first Taipei Film Festival, which runs Sept. 26-Oct. 5 (check out www.tff.com.tw for details on the films). Meanwhile, the biennial Taiwan International Documentary Festival is being held Sept. 19-27, offering an impressive lineup of Asian and international films.
