Fuji National Park is a memorable side-trip from Tokyo. Daytrippers can catch a shinkansen, or bullet train, from Tokyo Station--the 42 min. trip costs $33--while overnight visitors may opt for the more leisurely Romance train from Shinjuku station, an $18 ride with picture-window views of Mt. Fuji. The park offers unforgettable hiking, cablecar rides (and a thrilling descent) to Lake Ashi, plus unusual sites like the Hakone Open-Air Museum with sculptures by Moore and Rodin ($14 adult admission). The park has more than 250 onsen, or hot spring inns, where guests can relax in steaming pools and enjoy a postcard-perfect break from the big city.
