DETOURS

There's something about Insadong, also known as Mary's Alley. The area is the heart of Seoul's arts scene, with an array of galleries selling traditional crafts (like Koryo dynasty celadon or Shilla pottery), antiques and modern art. Sundays are best for browsing and bargaining in the tiny shops. Take time out for a little nibbling (sample the ttok, or stick rice cakes) and sipping (try the teahouse nestled in the courtyard of Kyungin gallery). Sanchon restaurant, owned by a former Buddhist monk, offers a $20 set dinner and nightly live music or dance. Insadong is 20 minutes from downtown by taxi or a 10-minute ride on the No. 3 subway line to Angkuk station.
