Detour

The Chatuchak weekend market is a must-squeeze for Bangkok visitors with time on their hands and plenty of stamina. With more than 6,000 stalls grouped into 26 sections, it's a claustrophobe's nightmare and a bargain-lover's fantasy. For navigation help, check out Nancy Chandler's hand-drawn map ($4 in bookstores). A $3 taxi-ride from most hotels, the market offers cheaper-than-downtown prices on nearly everything: Thai silk, ceramics, toys, jewelry, handmade paper, leather goods, batik, hats, shoes and more. Formerly just a weekend affair, it's now open Wednesday to Friday from 5 p.m. to midnight and all day Saturday until 11 p.m. (Sunday until 10 p.m.).
