MONDO MONGOLIA

STEPPE AHEAD: The Web has a wealth of Mongolian resources for visitors. Mongolia Online offers local news, history and weather, while The United Nations in Mongolia website at www.un-mongolia.mn offers a good list of links and articles on a variety of subjects, from "Mongolia's answer to Madonna" to human rights. It also pays to peruse the websites of local tour companies to make travel arrangements, particularly if you are intent on mountain climbing, biking, cultural tours to nomadic villages or rare animal viewing. Some established companies worth considering: Zavia Tours, which specializes in wildlife trips and scientific expeditions and has permission to bring small groups into strictly controlled areas such as the Gobi-Altai desert range, where snow leopards and other protected indigenous species roam; Karakorum Expeditions for cycling, hiking and mountain climbing; and Monand Company for a range of tour options. Tourists can also work with locals to help restore Baldan Baraivan, a Buddhist monastery; details are at www.home.earthlink.net/~crtp.
