Detour

Michelle Garnaut spent two weeks in 1996 as a guest chef at Shanghai's historic Peace Hotel. For the Hong Kong restaurateur, it was love at first bite. She began searching for her own local spot to start cooking, and finally found it on the top floor of a 1920s building at No. 5, the Bund. Her new restaurant, M on the Bund, serves up Mediterranean dishes at its elegant perch overlooking the Huangpu River. Garnaut's eatery pays homage to Shanghai's glory days without wallowing in nostalgia. Book ahead for a table this summer, when the rooftop garden terrace is bound to become Shanghai's most appetizing hotspot; contact M on the Bund at 8621-6350-9988.
