Detour
Chichin Island is an ice-cream cone's throw from Taiwan's southern port city of Kaohsiung. After a few minutes' trip by ferry or cross-harbor tunnel, newly arrived visitors are tempted to wander a while along Miauchian Road, a colorful strip of al fresco seafood stalls, carnival games and kitschy souvenir sellers. Seek refuge from the crowds by ducking into the Matsu Temple or by flying a kite on the beach. When mealtime beckons, fresh seafood rules the day: local faves include steamed fish served with soy and wasabi, oysters stewed in black bean sauce with ginger, grilled squid braised with sesame oil and chili sauce ... Summer just doesn't get any better than this.
