Short Cuts
NO MORE OVERLOAD: This month sees the introduction of more stringent restrictions on luggage being checked in at Singapore's Changi Airport. Airlines serving the Lion City have agreed to limit carry-on baggage to one item for economy-class passengers and two for business and first-class travelers. Carry-on bags must not weigh more than 7 kg or exceed a combined length, breadth and height of 115 cm. Check-in agents will still allow small additional personal items, including laptop computers, handbags, overcoats, crutches, walking sticks, reading materials, infant food and carrycots, umbrellas and small cameras. Why the stingier rules? The Airlines Operators Committee, which represents more than 40 carriers that use Changi, recently surveyed 1,200 passengers from all fare classes on incoming flights. Respondents firmly supported stricter controls: 81% backed reductions because of the potential safety hazard posed by excess baggage, while more than 70% cited the need for more equitable allocation of overhead bins.
