Bear In Mind

If you've got a bit of extra time, there is no shortage of great getaways from Kuala Lumpur. Kampung Kuantan, a sleepy hollow in Kuala Selangor, 75 km north of the capital, is famed for its firefly "show": thousands of the winged beetles appear each night along the Selangor River, flashing their glowing tails. On Malaysia's eastern coast, the Marang resort in the state of Terengganu provides both rooms with a view of the pristine beach and lodging in stilt-houses above a mangrove preserve. Only a 45-minute MAS flight ($80 roundtrip) from Kuala Lumpur, the idyllic resort offers snorkeling and diving as well as tours of local markets and a batik factory. For a quicker getaway from the capital, head to the Genting Highlands in the state of Pahang, which boasts a casino and resort that's a favorite with Kuala Lumpur gamblers. The drive from K.L., which takes only about an hour, winds along beautiful verdant valleys as you make your way up to the green-swathed former hill station.
