Hot Tip

Billed as the most exciting major golf event taking place in the last few days of the millennium, the World Cup of Golf being held in Kuala Lumpur from Nov. 15 to 22 needs no hyperbole to attract aficionados. The tournament will bring two-man teams from 32 nations to the Mines Resort Golf Club. Built on what was once the largest open-cast tin mine in the world, the Mines features a theme park, a shopping mall, a beach resort and a convention center. But the main attraction is the golf course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. It skirts the edge of a lake, providing golfers with a breathtaking backdrop--and an extra challenge on those long shots. Malaysia Airlines is offering holiday options for hackers who wish to attend the event. The MAS Golden Holidays golf packages include three rounds of golf, seven nights' hotel stay, daily buffet breakfast, transfers between the airport, hotels and the course, plus souvenirs bearing the World Cup of Golf logo. The packages range in price from $330 to $450 (exclusive of MAS airfares) depending on your choice of room at the Mines Beach Resort and Spa (which overlooks the course) or any of the other participating four- and five-star hotels in and around Kuala Lumpur. For those who want to watch and not play, a gallery package for observers starts at $450. If you can't wait until November, MAS is offering year-round "go for the green" packages. The pre-Cup deals offer return flights to K.L., rooms at five-star hotels and a chance to play in one of several 54-hole tournaments that will be played before the big one. Finalists receive free admission to the World Cup. For more information on the airline's 1999 golf packages, phone the MAS Golden Holidays office, at 603-265-5124. You can also find out more by sending an e-mail to gholidays@malaysiaairlines.com.my. Or visit the carrier's website at www.malaysia-airlines.com.my/wcg/html.
