Detour
Time was when tourists flocked to Macau for Chinese armoires, cabinets and other charming items of dubious antiquity. Since the source of most of the new, antique and faux-antique furniture is across the border, savvy shoppers are increasingly making a side trip from Macau to troll for bargains in the furniture warehouses of southern Guangdong province. The cash-and-carry markets like the one on Highway 105 between Zhuhai and Zhongshan may not be as slick as Macau's antiques alley or Hong Kong's Hollywood Road, but you'll save a bundle and perhaps even have fun haggling for trunks, baskets, shrine tables, carved windows and more.
