Detour

Need a break from buzzing around Singapore? Step inside Breathing Space, a holistic arts studio at 39 Tras Street, in the historic Tanjong Pagar district. Founded by lawyer Merlene Toh in 1997, the center offers lessons in de-stressing through yoga, tai chi, boxercise and belly dancing (from $13 for a one-hour class). Toh also runs retreats in Nongsa village on Batam Island. The $250 weekend workshops--with such calming offerings as sunrise meditation on the beach, drumming and water shiatsu--include the 40-min. ferry trips, meals and accommodation in wooden stilted houses. For more information, call 65-220-3867 or tune into www.breathingspace.com.sg.
