Bear In Mind

A few tips for a terrific Taipei trip: Taiwan's overseas consular offices can grant 14-, 30- or 60-day tourist visas, but note that citizens of 18 countries get visa-free entry for 14 days, so check if you're eligible. If you want to extend your stay after you've arrived, contact the Foreign Affairs office of the Taipei Police (tel. 2381-7494) at the corner of Wuchang Street and Chunghua Road. Passengers flying in on Taiwan's airlines should resist that long-distance feeling: anyone caught using cell phones or other electronic equipment during flights faces a possible jail sentence. To find out what's up while you're in town, head to the tourist information kiosk in the airport arrival lobby--or buy one of the city's two (soon to be three) English-language daily newspapers. Caves Books, at 103 Chungshan North Road, Section 2, sells a wide variety of books and magazines in English, plus local maps and guidebooks. And if you buy anything, save your receipt: a bimonthly government draw awards cash prizes for receipts matching three or more numbers of an eight-digit code.
