Asia Buzz: Rebirth of an Asian
Will Mahathir inspire the region's leaders to change?

In his online column last Thursday, my colleague Aparisim Ghosh zeroed in on the most intriguing political dialogue of the week: Malaysia's Mahathir Mohamad urging Pakistan strongman Pervez Musharraf to respect the niceties of democracy. For good measure Dr. M called for a fair trial for Pakistan's leading political prisoner, ex-P.M. Nawaz Sharif.

Hats off to Mahathir for rebranding himself as an advocate of those ideals. And expect to see some similar mid-career shifts. Here's a possible list of lectures for a future confab of Asia's current and former leaders:
JOSEPH ESTRADA on Sobriety. The pressures of celebrity and the opportunities for merrymaking only multiply as you move up the political ladder. Resist! An effective President must be clearheaded and well-rested at all times.
LEE KUAN-YEW on the Free Press. Sure, you may take a few lumps. But a vibrant and unshackled media is the cornerstone of building a democratic nation. Let them say what they want, particularly foreign commentators. Stay above the fray.

PHAN VAN KHAI on Economic Development. National success stories don't just happen. They are the result of bold plans to unleash the entrepreneurial vigor that exists in every land. Learn the secrets of Vietnam's astonishing economic miracle.
SUHARTO on Rectitude. As leader of your country, you may be tempted to take from the till or skim a bit of business for yourself of your family. Don't do it! No one respects a greedy guy.
TUNG CHEE-HWA on Leadership. Politics requires energy and tact. Don't hover in the background like some detached CEO. Get out there and press the flesh! Kiss some babies! Flatter the opposition! And watch your poll numbers soar.
KEIZO OBUCHI on Fiscal Responsibility. Economies go up, economies go down. When they hit a low point, resist efforts to try to spend your way to prosperity. It won't work. A useful lesson to remember: Never throw good money after bad.
JIANG ZEMIN on Style. If you're going to make it in the big world, you've got to look your best. That means wearing the finest clothes and the latest in fashionable eyewear. No silly hats. And never, ever comb your hair in public. What would people think?
MAHATHIR MOHAMAD on Tolerance and Forgiveness. (See above.)
BILL CLINTON on Fidelity. [Guest lecture] World leaders attract groupies like rock guitarists. The wise ruler just says No. It's never worth trifling with the institutions of democracy by pursuing short-term pleasure.
