The annual American tradition of Thanksgiving passed in Asia this week with a
certain amount of skepticism -- most likely a direct result of the current mirth
surrounding the U.S. election. Let's face it: no one wanted to really say that
the whole election debacle was somehow ironic and a little funny, because the
whole thing is getting more annoying and more tiresome with each passing day. It
has passed the point of curiosity and novelty, and the general feeling around
Asia is that we are "Waiting for Godot" -- except we know he'll turn up at one
point, sooner or later, and we're not sure we'll like him.

But nonetheless, people did gather this week (American or not) to give thanks.
Herewith, a joint collaboration from Hong Kong, Singapore, Denmark, Britain,
Belgium, Japan, Sweden, China, India and the U.S. to certify the official
Thanksgiving list for the global culture on demand; by popular vote, no hand
ballots.
1. Starbucks
An 8 a.m., a half-caff, double-latte is the nectar of life.
2. Sex
Because without it, "we wouldn't be here." That may change as in-vitro
accelerates, but for now, we'll take it.
3. Babies
See sex above
4. Old friends
They remember us from when we were cute.
5. American Cheese
Without Britney Spears, Elizabeth Taylor, Palm Beach County, the 1980s and Wal-
Mart, the rest of the world would have nothing to make fun of at fancy dress
parties.
6. Music
Because the world is just a documentary without a soundtrack.
7. Frequent Flyer Miles
Although a royal pain to execute, they make upgrades to business class a
feasible option.
There were of course other things that came up: good food and wine, the value of
rabbits, Prozac, higher education...The important thing is that no matter where
we are or who we are... just about everybody likes turkey.
