Gueorgui Pinkhassov

Paris-based Franco-Russian photographer Gueorgui Pinkhassov was born in Moscow in 1952 and has been interested in photography since school. In his teens, he studied cinematography at VGIK Institute of Cinematography in Moscow, and between 1971 and 1980 worked for the Mosfilm studio as a cameraman and later as a still photographer, gaining the attention of visual media giants such as Andrei Tarkovsky.

In 1978, Pinkhassov joined the Moscow Union of Graphic Arts, the status of which allowed him to participate freely in exhibitions.

In 1988, the Magnum Photos cooperative accepted him. Since then, he has worked actively in photojournalism and covered many of the major events of our times: the Armenian earthquake, the coups in Moscow and events in Mongolia, Indonesia and Africa, among many others. His work has been commissioned by publications such as The New York Times Magazine, GEO, The Independent and Figaro Magazine, allowing him to see the world from different perspectives.

Gueorgui Pinkhassov has been invited to participate in cultural programs organized by the Mayor's office of Ville de Paris, the Ministry of Culture, and various publishing houses as well as Magnum group projects. His latest book, Sightwalk, a collection of Tokyo photographs, was published by Phaidon in 1998.
