The early Japanese collections inspired a new generation of Western designers. The now commonplace use of all black, the deconstructed look and asymmetry can all be traced back to the big three pioneers -- Miyake, Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto. Dutch designers Viktor and Rolf took the black theme one step further in their Paris collection this year by painting their models a shimmering ebony.
