Toshiro Mifune and Machiko Kyo in "Rashomon"

Akira Kurosawa's "Rashomon" triumphed at the Venice Film Festival in 1951 and introduced Western audiences to Japan's strong film tradition. Fortunately, since then, viewers have no need to get an image of Japan from Americans with a message or a grudge.
