Male pilgrims traditionally shave their head before bathing to help them on their way to salvation; there are more than 5,000 barbers on hand to assist them. A head shave costs 10 rupees (25 cents) regardless of whether you're upper or lower caste. Each strand of hair is the equivalent of buying a cow for the God of your fancy -- and thereby speeding up your family's journey to heaven.
