One spectacular offshoot of China's liberalization has been the creation of a massive domestic tourist industry out of thin air, a development that has opened vast tracts of the country to the international traveler as well. A good example of these newly accessible destinations is Putuoshan--a beautiful, windswept island off China's southern coast, a few hours southwest of Shanghai by jetfoil.

Putuoshan is famous as one of the four main mountains sacred to Buddhism, as well as home to several ancient monasteries. But if you're looking for more secular pleasures--including China's most beautiful beaches--stay on the ferry pier at Putuoshan and ask for the slow boat (still only 15 minutes) to the island of Zhujiajian. Fine sand beaches stretch along its coastline like pearls on a string, each several kilometers long and up to half a kilometer wide at low tide.

With pine forest hills as a backdrop, the setting is idyllic--and just right for swimming. As tourism in China is still in its infancy, you'll be treated to the sight of beachgoers in their Sunday best: often the only concession to the tropical surroundings is a trouser leg rolled up to the knee. But the recently opened Seaview Hotel, (86-580) 603-1222, provides ample evidence of the advances the local travel industry has made. The striking hotel is built on a low bluff between two rocky promontories and enjoys unrivaled views.

The trip to the ferry pier from Shanghai takes an hour by taxi ($25). The change of boats in Putuoshan can be slightly tricky, so if you don't speak Mandarin, make sure you have the directions written down.
