SEX
PLEASE, WE'RE CHINESE The museum of Chinese Ancient Sex Culture, the
mainland's first sex museum, opened last fall in Shanghai. Located down
a small alley behind the Sofitel Hotel, the museum is the work of 67-year-old
sociologist and former People's Liberation Army officer Liu Dailin. While
it may sound a bit dodgy, the museum maintains high standards and is quite
scholarly. (Of course, it's still something of a shock to walk into the
refined surroundings and be confronted with ancient dildos and statues of
folks having sex with dogs.) Liu has done groundbreaking work as a sexologist,
financing and organizing the first survey of the nation's intimate habits.
He combined his two interests, human sexuality and antiques, to build up
a 1,300-piece collection that varies from a Shang Dynasty stone phallus
to an enormous prostitute's bed specially kitted out for the rigors of the
trade. Info is provided in Chinese and English. The authorities won't let
the museum hang a sign, however, so it can be hard to find. Call (86-21)
6351-4381 if you get lost.
