Detour
Visitors to Hong Kong's beaches are sure to encounter too many people
and too much garbageunless they are prepared to walk a bit. From
the village of Sai Kung, in the north of the territory, you can trek to
a number of great beaches. One of the best is Ham Tin, an expanse of clear
sand and clean water, with only the occasional cow to compete for space.
Take a taxi from Sai Kung to the High Island Reservoir; from there it's
a 90-minute walk along the Maclehose Trail. Small swells attract Hong
Kong's surfing population, and the isolation draws many friendly hikers.
On one end of the beach is a restaurant that serves up simple but delicious
meals.
