TWINKLE TOES
2/23/87
In light of
IMELDA
MARCOS' well-known
reputation for extravagance, 65 parasols
are easy to explain; after all, the sun is
hot in Manila. But what did the former
First Lady of the Philippines do with 15
mink coats? These were among the items
listed in the government's latest
inventory of possessions left behind in
Malacañang Palace when former
President FERDINAND
MARCOS and his
wife fled the country last February. Also
listed were 508 floor-length gowns, 888
handbags and 71 pairs of sunglasses. The
final tally on Imelda's shoes was 1,060
pairs, considerably fewer than the 3,000
initially reported. Still, the legend of
the shoes lives on. Included among them
was one particularly unusual pair that
were outfitted with batteries to make them
sparkle in the dark.

UNSPARING THE
ROD
5/9/94
Sitting in his Singapore jail
cell, American teenager
MICHAEL
FAY must be hoping for the
best--and expecting the worst. Fay, 18, convicted
of vandalism and sentenced to six lashes with a
rattan cane, submitted a 13-page plea for clemency
that was being debated by the Cabinet last week.
Fay's cause has been championed most notably by
President Bill Clinton, who has called on the
Singapore government to spare the cane, several
strokes of which can send a recipient into shock.
But Singapore is unlikely to relent.

ASTROLOGICALLY AUSPICIOUS
1/24/77
Horns, gongs and drums
sounded throughout the Royal Plaza of
Bangkok to herald a royal wedding. Just
before the astrologically auspicious
moment for the ceremony--8:39
a.m.--CROWN PRINCE
VAJIRALONGKORN,
24, and his cousin
SOMSAWALI
KITTIYAKORN, 19,
arrived in a procession led by two yellow
Rolls-Royces. The bride's father added
another Western touch. He gave the prince
a 1936 car adorned with strings of tin
cans and a sign saying "Just
Married".

NOW PLAYING AT THE
PALACE
11/28/88
home_for the
MAHARAJA OF
JODHPUR ("Bupjee"
to his friends) is the marble Umaid
Bhavan, with its 374 rooms, banquet hall
for 300 and a dome 190 ft. high. "The
palace is so large," he says, "there are
portions I have not seen in 15 years."
Since kings nowadays must pay their own
way in India, the Maharaja has turned most
of the Bhavan into a hotel. Last week he
was in Manhattan to drum up
business.
CAREER
MOM
3/1/93
When
BENAZIR
BHUTTO gave birth
to her third child three weeks ago in
London, her husband Asif Zadari was still
in a Pakistani prison on corruption
charges. Released after being jailed 28
months, he left for Britain. Will
Pakistan's former Prime Minister now have
less time for politics? Women, she says,
can have both a career and a
family.
