Settled. THE VALLEY OF THE GREAT SALT LAKE, in 1847, by Brigham Young, leader of the Mormon Church, and a party of 143, to escape hostility toward their group in Illinois. Young plans to return to Council Bluffs, Iowa, and lead the rest of the members of his faith to a permanent home in Utah.
