To dramatize their demand for a constitutional amendment that would grant women the right to vote, more than 5,000 suffragists staged a dramatic parade in Washington, DC in March 1913. An estimated 500,000 spectators watched the parade, which attracted major publicity when police failed to protect the marchers from a hostile mob.
