PATH TO WAR
Born in 1885 to a Quaker family in New Jersey, Alice Paul was a brilliant activist and organizer. In 1907, she traveled to England, where she was inspired by the tactics and techniques of Britain's militant suffragists. Paul founded the National Woman's Party in 1916 and led numerous campaigns of civil disobedience—including hunger strikes—that were instrumental in securing the vote for women in the U.S.
