Beginning in 1917, members of the National Woman's Party set up a daily picket line at the White House, marking the first time Americans had picketed the President's residence. These "silent sentinels," as the protesters were called, quoted President Wilson on their banners and urged him to extend democracy to women in America at the same time he was fighting to preserve it in Europe.
