Alice Paul and more than 150 other women who picketed the White House in 1917 were arrested and imprisoned on the trumped-up charge of "obstructing traffic." Sentenced to seven months in prison, Paul embarked on a 22-day hunger strike, which ultimately brought sympathy and support for her cause. The suffragists argued that they had been arrested because of their political beliefs, not for having committed criminal acts.
