The next year, President Woodrow Wilson reversed his position on women's suffrage by endorsing votes for women as a war measure that would strengthen democracy in the U.S. Despite Wilson's support for a constitutional amendment to guarantee the vote to women, the U.S. Senate rejected the suffrage amendment in 1918.
