PATH TO WAR
Re-introduced in 1919, the suffrage amendment passed both the Senate and House and was then sent to the states for ratification. Thirty-six states needed to approve the measure in order for it to become a part of the Constitution. On August 26, 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th Amendment. After decades of struggle, American women were finally guaranteed the right to vote.
