Into battle: Afghan fighters joined with U.S. and allied warplanes and special forces troops to attack hundreds of suspected al-Qaeda and Taliban holdouts in eastern Afghanistan, near Gardez. The mission was bolstered by the use of a 2,000-pound "thermobaric bomb," designed to deprive caves of oxygen. One American soldier is killed and more than 16 are injured as the allied forces meet unexpectedly fierce resistance.
